I have to thank to my friend who is studying Advertising and Communications and seems to be enjoying it very much. The reason why I'm grateful to her is that she gave me a fantastic example! She also has a blog but is not a mish-mash like mine, but has a strong orientation about advertising! I was reading it (and watching it) thinking 'Hmm... I wish I was that passionate about what I'm studying! 'Coz.. well, Business Studies!
And then and idea slapped me on my face! I am passionate about Business! Only because I'm not passionate about the piles of books that we're required to read doesn't mean that I don't love the idea of becoming successful, starting something on my own and being different of the average people that do not care about the extra effort that has to be implemented in order to prosper.
Ok, I'll stop babbling, getting down to work now!
First Post!
The first example that comes to my mind is Richard Branson! This man is amazing and is the perfect example of a high-achiever with incompatible results! Let me outline some key facts:
1. He started his fist business at the age of 16.
He didn't even finish High School. Instead started his first business venture with his friends in a basement!
2. Although he had dyslexia, that did not break him down.
Once he put a little bit of an effort, success arrived on his side. Richard won the first prize for the best essay! And the business I told you about was actually a magazine.
3.He started with almost no money.
Just ideas, supportive family and desire for challenges. And you can't really expect from a student to be a millionaire.
4. Unconventional business thinking has been with Richard since early childhood.
Sir Branson and his friend decided to grow trees and to sell them later on. Unfortunately, there was a rabbit invasion. The plants were severely.. eaten.
5. No giving up.
After the rabbits did this, the boys didn't quit. Instead, they shot the poor animals and sold them for meat. And the rest was cooked and eaten.
6. I dare to call him Richard, where as he has the title 'Sir' before his name.
Sir Richard Branson has always been people-lover, who cares about his staff and doesn't treat it like sheep. As he has repeated many times, one of his most unpleasant things to do is to fire people.
7. An achieved goal doesn't satisfy his entrepreneurial appetite.
If he had stopped developing his company when he saw that things were going on well, Virgin would never have become what it is today. Over 400 companies worldwide!
8. He acts in (almost) the same way in his 60s as when he was in his 20s.
When they asked him if he wanted to retire and have a rest, he answered that would be like taking away his life! He isn't doing it for money. He loves all the risk taking, gambling, winning, losing, feeling those butterflies in your stomach.
If you want to learn more about Virgin or Richard Branson, I strongly recommend that you read "How I lost my virginity". It is an unputdownable book!
